The GI tag, also known as Geographical Indication Certification, is a type of intellectual property right granted to a product. It says that the product originates from a specific geographical region. And it possesses distinctive qualities or a reputation closely linked to that particular region.
In simple words, when a product is developed at a particular geographical area, it carries it's implicit qualities, like taste, colour, smell and those are gained by that area's specific quality of soil, water, weather and the farmer's expertise. After securing the GI tag, the product is stamped with that tag.
This GI tag is beneficial to the people who are working on their products for generations together. The INDUSTRIAL POLICY AND PROMOTION department has worked very hard for promotion and marketing of GI.
